The Young Limousin Breeders will be holding their annual calf show of pedigree and commercial Limousin calves born in 2014 on January 10th at Ballymena Mart.
Judging this year’s show will be Melanie Alford, from Foxhill Farm, pedigree and commercial livestock.
Melanie along with husband, Mike, and daughter Charlotte are very well known throughout livestock circles. With many achievements to name and a newly purchased record priced heifer, Glenrock Illusion to add to the herd this family are no strangers within the Limousin breed.
Recently the Alford’s added another championship to their list when they won Red Ladies Day held at Carlisle in December with their homebred pedigree heifer, Foxhillfarm Infinity. This heifer, sired by Hartlaw Excaliber then went on to become the top priced heifer selling for 8,000gns.
This year sees a great entry of both pedigree and commercial calves and no doubt the quality will be of the same standard as previous years as this show marks just the beginning of many of the calves show season.
Past prize winners have gone on to be extremely successful, with just one example of this being Gareth Small’s commercial heifer ‘Khaleesi’. This commercial Limousin heifer sired by Swarland Eddie and bred by James Alexander was shown as a young calf at the calf show last year and won her class.
Khaleesi went on to add many titles to her name, with just a few being Supreme Champion Commercial at the Agri Expo 2014 and then becoming supreme champion at the most prestigious fat stock show, The East of England, Smithfield Festival 2014.
Showing of the calves will commence at 10am following the young handlers competition which begins at 9am.
This year, different to any other, there will be a sale of show calves, both pedigree and commercial. This calf sale will follow the female sale held after judging.
