The deadline for entries to this year’s Farming Life and Danske Bank Awards has been extended by two weeks to facilitate increased demand.
The new deadline for entries is now Friday, September 18.
Farming Life editor Ruth Rodgers explained the decision: “Due to an overwhelming demand for entries we have taken the decision to push back the deadline to September 18.
“The awards are always very popular and this year is certainly no different. I would urge anyone thinking about submitting an entry to get the forms filled in and submitted as soon as possible.”
Returning for the second year as sponsors of the Wildlife Farmer of the Year are the RSPB.
Claire Barnett from RSPB Northern Ireland said: “We are delighted to once again sponsor the Wildlife Friendly Farmer of the Year category in the Farming Life and Danske Bank awards.
“Across Northern Ireland nature is in trouble. Birds that were once considered common here, like curlew and yellowhammer, have suffered huge population decreases in a single generation and we are in danger of losing some of these species altogether.
“However, as custodians of the countryside, farmers are in a unique position to help halt and even reserve these declines. By taking steps to farm with wildlife in mind, such as managing species rich grasslands and leaving over-wintering stubble, farmers can help give nature a home on their land.
“RSPB NI provides advice to farmers in ‘hotspot’ areas, such as, the wet grassland areas around Lough Beg and Lough Erne and we’re already beginning to see positive results.
“However we know that there are many more farmers doing things to help birds and wildlife that we aren’t aware of. We would encourage them, or anyone who knows them, to apply to this year’s awards and have their hard work recognised.”
The Farming Life and Danske Bank Awards will be held at the Ramada Hotel, Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast, on Thursday, October 29.
