The third annual January Gems in-lamb Texel female sale returns to Ballymena Mart on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at noon with entries from the Ballyhivistock, Blue Gates, Curley, Gruig, Kilrail House and Redford Texel flocks.

A super catalogue of over 70 lots, both gimmers and ewe lambs, offers the potential purchaser a vast array of bloodlines from both the ewes and service sires as well as first class females to enhance an already established flock or as foundation stock for a new breeder.

Breeding pedigree Texel sheep for both the commercial and pedigree markets has been the main focus for all the vendors, with special attention on producing good carcasses with tight skins while keeping a tight eye on maintaining the true Texel characteristics – this aim is clearly evident within the catalogue.

The Ballyhivistock flock open the sale with a maternal sister to the flock’s top price gimmer at last year’s sale, followed by a gimmer from the very successful Ballyhivistock Performer and Tulisa line.

Also coming highly recommended from the Simpson and Calvin partnership is a Forkins Umar daughter out of a Tamnamoney Ned dam – she has an excellent maternal bloodline proven to breed many top quality sheep.

Ballyhivistock Service Sires include two new purchases from the Drummillar flock; Whiskey, who was purchased at the NI Texel Club Main Sale – he is owned outright by the Ballyhivistock flock and Drummillar Wizard – purchased in partnership with the Kerryhill and Kildowney Texel flocks, he was purchased at the NI Premier sale for 2000gns.

Concluding the line-up of service sires is the homebred Ballyhivistock Valhalla the best of the Hullhouse Schnapps sons a full brother to Ballyhivistock Titan who sold to Orrisdale Texels in 2012 for 2,600gns and Fairmount Seven-O-Seven a tremendous breeder within the flock consistently producing quality lambs.

Ballyhivistock take pride in the fact that only natural service is used keeping the breeding lines as unique as possible.

Blue Gates

Catalogued for the Blue Gates flock run by brothers Chris and Martin Mullan are a strong group of gimmers, some of which are in-lamb to senior stock ram Millcomb Vindicator purchased jointly with the Crawfordsland flock at the NI Premier sale in 2014, for the second highest price of the day.

In particular on offer from Blue Gates flock is a great Carran Sutherland’s Star daughter in-lamb to Sandelford Wolverine, she is possibly the best gimmer ever presented for sale by the flock.

Wolverine is one of the two new stock rams purchased in 2015; he is an Orrisdale Viking son which has been widely used in the flock this year. Also purchased in 2015 at the NI Premier Sale was Kiltariff Warrior, a massive Cowal Viceroy son.

Blue Gates have enjoyed many successes in the sales ring with both ewes and rams and have extended their accomplishments into the show ring receiving their first Show Breed Championship and Champion of Champions at Londonderry and Limavady Show in 2014 with a Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold ewe lamb.

The renowned Curley Texel Flock bred by John and Robin Trimble from Rathfriland offer for sale a super selection of Teiglum Tornado and Strathbogie Smokey Blue daughters, with both rams having bred well within the flock.

Curley lots come in-lamb to Cowal Viceroy, purchased jointly at Lanark 2014 for 8,000gns. He has bred award winning sons in 2015, and has himself grown into an impressive ram; Millar’s Wallender who is an exciting new purchase selected for his outlook and correctness and Knock Trident who has been a consistent breeder with offspring winning major shows and sales.

Included in this year’s sale from the Curley flock are maternal sisters to the two joint overall top price gimmers at last year’s January Gems Sale.

Also entered from the Curley flock is the 5th prize ewe lamb at RUAS 2015 – she comes in-lamb to Millar’s Wallender, these are just a few of the notable entries forward from the flock.

The Gruig flock, bred by Adrian McCartney, offers a strong batch of daughters by the successful stock ram Humeston Talent, whose sons have sold to 7000gns and has consistently bred strong lambs with great carcases and skins. The Gruig gimmers will be sold in –lamb to Charben Venom, a Strathbogie Thunder son out of a Baltier Panther dam and Bregagh Walcot a Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold son.

Kilrail House and Redford

Completing the thrilling line-up for this catalogue are a number of special gimmers and ewe lambs from the well-established flocks - Kilrail House and Redford, bred by the husband and wife team of John and Leona Young.

They present a selection of gimmers in-lamb to the senior ram Far Hey Victorious, purchased at Lanark 2014 and two stirring new purchases Blackstown Wayne and Mullan Windsor, a Garngour Upperclass son. Ewes entered are sired by a number of successful tups including, Goldies Rocket, Botera Unstoppable, Ballydesland Ugene and the home bred rams Kilrail House Universal and Kilrail House V-Tech.

A number of the gimmers on offer have already proven themselves by rearing lambs in 2015. Both flocks offer for sale a selection of strong ewe lambs true to breed character.

Breeding within both flocks has been predominantly focused on producing offspring which are suitable for both the commercial and pedigree market, the success of their aim has been reflected in the sales ring as well as being recognised in their achievements in the Northern Ireland Texel Flock Competition over the past number of years.

As an added bonus to this year’s sale, as well as the outstanding catalogue of sheep on offer, AgriCare Nutrition are kindly donating 2.5 litres of ‘Finish Rite Sheep Finisher’ or ‘Ewe Bloom’ to the purchaser of the highest priced female in the sale.
