Consumer Council to attend Balmoral Show to raise awareness of energy and water issues

Farmers and householders can potentially save money on utility bills and the Consumer Council will show them how, when it attends this year’s Balmoral Show from Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 May 2015.

Kathy Graham, Director of Policy at the Consumer Council said: “The Balmoral show is a great opportunity for us to give face to face advice to consumers. We’ll be on hand with information on what to do if they want to switch energy suppliers and how to complain if the service is not what it should be. Farmers and businesses can also talk to us about their water bills.

“People coming along can also find out about the Consumer Council’s Water Champion Award scheme which recognises savings made by farms and business water users in relation to usage and bills. Recent recipients of the award have included Belmore Court and Motel, IKEA and Hughes Mushrooms.”

One of the most recent recipients of the Water Champions award was Hughes Mushrooms. Speaking about the award Tanya Maguire, Hughes Mushrooms said: “Water sustainability is one of Hughes Mushrooms key environmental focus areas. Over the past few years we have identified our main areas of water use and implemented systems internally to reduce consumption. These actions have lead to a decrease of around 12500 litres water use per week and also financial savings for the company. Hughes Mushrooms are very proud of our recent Water Champions Award as it recognises the efforts and contributions within the factory and encourages us to keep investigating ways to maintain and further reduce our water consumption to ensure water sustainability for future generations.”

Kathy concluded: “Show goers will also have the opportunity to enter the Consumer Council’s ‘Snap and Win’ competition to win either a 500 litre fill of home heating oil or a tablet. Runner up prizes will also be up for grabs. Simply pop along to our stand, located in the Sustainability Village, take a selfie and post it to one of our social media channels.”
