Counting potatoes is a skill that most people find hard to master – but not so, in the case of James Mounstephen from East Belfast.
During a visit to the Wilson’s Country Stand at this year’s Tesco Taste NI Celebration the young man accepted the challenge of guessing the number of potatoes on the company’s main display.
Comprising tubers from all the main varieties marketed by Wilson’s, James successfully ‘guestimated’ a figure of 1,112.
“The actual number of potatoes featured the display was 1107,” confirmed Wilson’s Denise Doyle.
“James was just five out making him the winner of the competition. We had a tremendous entry, from the large crowds of people attending this year’s Taste NI event.”
For his efforts James received a prize of Tesco gift vouchers to the value of £100. The prize presentation took place recently at Tesco’s Newtownbreda store on the outskirts of Belfast.
Denise Doyle continued: “Local interest in potatoes as a source of healthy nutrition continues to grow. We are currently committed to communicating the different taste
experiences which the various potato varieties can offer and the myriad culinary uses to which potatoes can be put.
“The 2014 harvest is almost complete and I can confirm that eating quality this year will be excellent. Potatoes also represent excellent value for money.”
