Entries are now being sought for the annual Beltex cross bred sheep carcase competition which will be held at Dunbia’s premises in Dungannon on Friday, 31st July.
Organised by the Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club and supported by the Beltex Sheep Society, Dunbia and AB Europe, there is a total prize fund of £550 available at this year’s event.
As well as the popular pairs of Beltex cross bred commercial lambs category, which will have prizes for placed pairs, 1st -10th, a cash prize of £50 is also on offer for the best individual carcase this year.
“The competition has been running for more than 10 years now and with the farmers having to decide which of the live lambs are paired before weigh-in, this is a clear test of their ability to not only judge the fat class but also the kill out percentage to ensure that the best matching pairs are placed before the judge,” explained Colin Barnes of the Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club.
All lambs entered should be in the usual processor spec of 16 – 21kg dead weight.
“Farmers, members of Young Farmers’ Clubs and producers who would like to view the carcases after judging are very welcome to come along and do so,” added Colin. “It’s a very worthwhile visit for those wising to get involved in live and carcase judging.”
