An entry of 930 sheep at Markethill on Wednesday 6th January returned a noticeably firmer trade for fat hoggets.
Heavy hoggets sold to £83 each with several pens from £78 to £82.50 each. Top rate of 321p per kilo was paid for 24 kilos at £77 each, followed by 320p per kilo for 25 kilos at £80 each. All good quality pens sold from 300p to 319p per kilo. In all, 380 heavy hoggets averaged 25.9 kilos at £79 each (305p).
Good quality middleweight hoggets sold from 310p to 333p per kilo for 20.4 kilos at £68 each, followed by 331p per kilo for 23 kilos at £76 each. In all, 370 middleweight hoggets averaged 22.3 kilos at £71.50 each (321p).
Stores sold to 354p per kilo for 17.2 kilos at £61 each. Main demand sold from 315p to 336p per kilo.
Cull ewes sold to £95 each with 1st quality ewes from £65 to £87 each. Plainer ewes sold from £35 to £55 each.
Breeding sheep sales start Wednesday 13th January with a special entry of 100 Mule/Suffolk and Suffolk/cheviot in-lamb hoggets and young ewes.
