The first qualifiers for the 2015 McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship were selected at Ballymena show.
The rain stayed away long enough for a super entry of dairy cattle to enter the judging ring.
The judge for this first qualifying round was Mr Edward Griffiths, from the Coachgate Herd, near Sheffield.
Edward is no stranger to Northern Ireland, having judged the final of last year’s McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship at Antrim Show. He was very pleased with the two qualifiers he selected at Ballymena.
First to qualify was Marleycote Sea Lily 14, an Ayrshire cow jointly owned by the McLean family and Mr S Cromie. This exceptional third calver recently classified EX93 and is currently averaging 45 litres/day. She is projected to yield 11,800kg in this lactation at 4.06% BF and 3.11% Protein.
The second Ballymena qualifier was the Holstein cow Priestland 5235 PS James Rose, owned by the McLean family. Classified VG88 as a fresh cow in her second lactation, she calved down on 6th November 2015 and is currently yielding 40 litres/day at 4.58% BF 3.47% Protein. She is projected to yield 10,800kg for the lactation.
McLarnon Feeds would like to congratulate these winning cows from Ballymena Show and wish them all the best for the Final of the 14th McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship on 25th July at the 109th Antrim Show.
