Rathfriland Mart will be the venue for one of the first spring lamb competitions of 2015 and will be hosted by the Irish Hampshire Down club.
The competition will take place on Tuesday evening, 24th March with classes for both commercial and pure bred pairs of lambs.
The well-known local butcher and stock judge Mr Jim Quail from Banbridge will be judging and looking for prime lambs that would satisfy his most discerning customers. The club would like to thank Rumenco Maxx Energy Lick Bucket for sponsoring the classes with product to winning pairs.
Judging will commence at 5pm and the sale will be held at 7pm. In the past this sale has secured record prices for spring lambs on the run up to the Easter continental trade and all lambs crossed with a Hampshire ram are welcome.
The Hampshire Down Club will also be sponsoring classes for Hampshire Down cross commercial lambs at Ballymena mart the following day on Wednesday, 25th March. These will be for pens of three or more lambs. Judging will be at 10am and the sale will start at 12 noon. Again this will be a chance for commercial breeders to cash in on what is likely to be the season’s best prices.
