Increase of spring lambs at Rathfriland

While hogget numbers have decreased, spring lambs have increased at Rathfriland.

Prices for both categories have also decreased. Spring lambs sold to £88 per head for 24.5k from a Newry farmer. Hoggets sold to £98 per head for 33k texels from Garvaghy. Two further lots from this farm sold at £92 each. Fat ewe numbers decreased also to 154 head with a top price this week of £85.

A feature of Friday’s sale was the strong trade for dropped calves. A magnificent blonde heifer just a few months old sold at £515 for a Newry farmer. A pen of strong, mostly BB from Banbridge sold @ £475, £440, £440, £430 and £425. A Castlewellan farmer reached £465 for Ch Heifer calves. A pen of BB weanlings topped the weanling section @ £875 for a 400k lot with 380k @ £865 from the same farm. A pen of 15, mostly Ch from Leitrim sold to 245p/k for 318k @ £780. A bigger entry of heifers cleared up to £930 for a 450k Ch from Annaghbrague. Bullocks sold to £1170 for a 658k Ch from Ballynahinch. A Dromara farmer sold a 478k Sim @ £1015. A Banbridge farmer sold a 436k AA @ £925.
