Newry & Armagh DUP MLA and Stormont Agriculture Committee Chairman William Irwin MLA hosted the UFU Dairy Committee visit to Stormont on Wednesday which also included a discussion on the current difficulties facing the dairy industry.
Mr Irwin stated: “This was a very useful engagement with dairy farmers affiliated with the Ulster Farmers’ Union and as Chairman of the Agriculture Committee it was important to gauge the opinion of the members in terms of the impact being felt as a result of the current pressures.
“The pressure on the dairy industry continues to mount and indeed in recent days across the United Kingdom I note that DEFRA are now realising the seriousness of the factors that are contributing to this crisis. It is vital that within our own devolved institutions, within Westminster and in Europe, a joined up approach is taken to help achieve some of the measures that could help offset some of these adverse pressures.”
He concluded: “The members of the Dairy Committee are obviously deeply concerned at the current crisis and I can assure both the UFU committee and dairy farmers across Northern Ireland that I will continue to voice their concerns within the Agriculture Committee.”
