Chairman of Stormont’s Agriculture Committee William Irwin MLA has welcomed the approval by the EU Commission of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme.
Commenting after the EU Commission granted the necessary approval to allow the new programme to commence the Newry & Armagh DUP said: “I welcome the approval issued by the Commission which will allow the new round of Rural Development Programme funding to be rolled out across the province.
“It is important that all those with responsibility for the administration of the programme move quickly to ensure that the financial assistance available through the fund is made accessible to the industry as soon as possible.”
“Our agriculture industry is under severe pressure at this time and it is important that the various elements of the programme which are designed to assist our industry, such as the farm business improvement scheme, are delivered in a manner which is accessible and easily navigated by our farming community.”
He concluded: “It is vital that in this new round of funding the types of hurdles and red tape that plagued that last programme are not repeated and the assistance is delivered in a swift fashion to those in our rural community who need it most.”
