A very large entry of 700 single suckled calves attracted tremendous bidding resulting in the dearest trade this year. Buyers appreciated the large number of top quality calves and bid furiously to buy their choices. The Border Leicester society held their annual show and sale in Ballymena mart last Monday evening under the banner of Ulster Ram Breeders Assocation. This was a very special occasion as the Border Leicester Society are celebrating 100 years in business and to mark their centenary year, all exhibitors and Tom Symington and MD of Ballymena mart, Shaun Irvine were presented with Belfast crystal cut glass plaques. Coote Geelan, Co Leitrim judged the show and awarded the Allam Cup to James Aiken for his first ram lamb sold at 800gns. Howard McIlwaine received the shearling cup for his 1st shearling sold at 380gns. Joe Adams was awarded reserve champion for his first ewe lamb which was best female receiving the Anderson cup. The celebration continued into the sale ring where a strong trade resulted and as this is the only public sale of Bord Leicesters in Ireland, buyers from both north and south bid well for the better quality lots. Highest prices were shearling rams 380gns Howard McIlwaine and 380gns and 280gns for Joe Adams. Ram lambs sold to 800gns for James Aiken, 600gns and 320gns twice for D and L Mawhinney, 320gns for Harold Dickey for an aged ewe. Ewe lambs sold to 480gns and 320gns.

Another big sale of 4000 sheep in Ballymena on Monday evening resulted in a steady trade. Breeding hoggets sold to £160, ewe lambs to £108, store lambs to £61 and rams to £800.
