MARTS: Hilltown

An entry of 500 calves were on show at the second suckler show and sale of Limousin calves at Hilltown on Tuesday the 6th of October.

A wide pool of buyers from up and down the country ensured an steady , consistent trade. Judged by Gareth Corrie of Newtownards.

Leading the sale prices were a 548k bullock making £1090, from Vincent Quinn of Kilkeel. An a 512k heifer making £1040 from Brian Mcconville of Ballyward.

Overall champion and 1st in the class was a 512k bullock from Joseph Doyle of Kilkeel, who returned back to his own home. Reserve champion was a heifer from Colm Farrell of Rostrevor, also coming first in her class at 366k making £1000. Second place and top rate in the bullocks went to Terence Rooney of Mayobridge, at 342k making £950 [277ppk]. Following up after Terence was Oliver O’Hare also of Mayobridge coming third, at 364k making £940.  Vincent Quinn came second in the heifers , at 328k making £810. Colm Farrell received another prize coming third in this class with a heifer at 356k making £750.

Mayobridge farmer: 488k at £1000, 342k at £950, 258k at £705 Hilltown farmer: 242k at £670, 302k at £780. Newry farmer: 220k at £600, 232k at £610, 190k at £450. Castlewellan farmer: 360k at £870.  

Heifers: Top rate of 361ppk at 122k making £440, from Sean O’Hanlon of Hilltown. Castlewellan farmer: 424k at £1035. Hilltown farmer: 422k at £1010, 250k at £600. Rostrevor farmer: 380k at £905,280k at £680. Banbridge farmer: 298k at £855, 248k at £640. Kilkeel farmer: 336k at £820, 376k at £800, 288k at £730,294k at £695. Dromara farmer: 304k at £725.

An entry of over 2000 sheep at Hilltown on Thursday 8th October and Saturday 10th October, resulted in a great trade.Top price of £77.50 was paid for 28k lambs, from Castlewellan farmer. Top rate of 359ppk for 13.5k making £48.50 from a Castlewellan farmer also.

Cull ewes sold to £72 from Hilltown farmer. Fat rams sold to £90 from Rostrevor farmer.

Breeding stock - Suffolk and Texel rams sold to £340 from Markethill farmer. Breeding ewes sold to £125 from Hilltown farmer.
