Mueller’s HiPerForm refrigeration system is renowned for its rapid cooling ability and low energy consumption, making it one of the most efficient and market-leading bulk milk tanks on the world market.
Ballymoney dairy farmers William and Yvonne McCrea, and son Dean, installed a Mueller 12,000 litre P model tank and a heat recovery system in July 2014, and instantly noticed a significant reduction in their electricity bill.
“Our electricity bill dropped by approximately a third after the new tank was installed,” explained Yvonne, who manages the financial records for the farm business.
“It’s hard to believe, especially as the new tank is much bigger than the old one.”
The McCrea family run a herd of 160 commercial dairy cows. “Our old tank was an ice-bank DX unit, which was continually breaking down,” said William. “It broke my heart, and it was very hard to get replacement gas.
“We heard great reports about Mueller tanks from neighbouring farmers. Our new tank was supplied by Mueller distributors Cecil Wilson and Intercool Engineering. The service was excellent and the change-over was quick and efficient.”
He added: “It has definitely been a good investment. The tank has a 15 minute wash cycle, and uses thirty per cent less water than the old tank which took over one hour to complete a full wash.
“If the milk is collected late, we can get the tank washed and be ready to start milking without a delay. It’s very convenient.
“The Mueller tank also has rapid cooling ability, which ensures the milk reaches its desired temperature by the end of milking. More importantly, our energy usage has been reduced, representing a saving of over £1,000 off every bill.”
The McCrea family also installed a Mueller Fre-Heater, a heat recovery system which converts waste heat from the milk cooler’s condensing unit and uses it to heat water at no extra cost.
Backed by a five year warranty, trials have proven that the Fre-Heater can recover up to 60% of wasted heat energy to create ‘free’ hot water.
“It’s fantastic!” stressed Dean. We have plenty of hot water to wash the parlour, and clean the buckets used to feed the calves. There is always hot water in the tap, which is useful for other jobs such as mixing electrolytes or heating colostrum.”
Mueller tanks are available in three models: the low profile oval design O model; the narrow profile circular P model; and the vertical silo. They are manufactured to high specifications, and are available in a range of sizes.
All models include a seamless polished texture, a watertight outer vessel, adjustable legs, and a stainless steel lockable outlet. Larger models have a fixed ladder.
The MIII control unit is a standard feature on all new vertical and horizontal tanks and milk silos. Its modern design incorporates a ‘quick wash’ cleaning function, complete with automated detergent and acid dosage control system.
Mueller’s comprehensive ‘Milk Guard’ system is also built-in. It monitors milk cooling temperatures and times, as well as wash water temperatures and other data, and can store the information for up to six months. The digital panel includes an audio and visual alarm system which alerts the user if a problem occurs.
A host of optional extras are also available, including scales which weigh the contents of the vessel.
“Dairy farmers are continually striving to minimise production costs and reduce overheads, resulting in an increased demand for Mueller HiPerForm tanks,” said Cecil Wilson, of Wilson Milk Tanks based at Carnlough, County Antrim.
