The Northern Stars In-lamb Texel Gimmer sale has become firmly rooted in the annual agricultural calendar.

The sixth Northern Stars Sale scheduled to take place at Ballymena Livestock Mart on 20th December 2014 at 12.30pm.

This year a total of 100 select gimmers from five well known and renowned award winning flocks are being put on offer just in time to purchase that last minute extra special Christmas present.

This year joining the sale of select in-lamb gimmers of Alastair Gault (Forkins and Cherryvale), Richard Henderson (Ballynahone), Roger Strawbridge (Tamnamoney) and Victor and David Chestnutt (Clougher and Bushmills) are guest consignments from local young breeder Andrew Kennedy, Maineview Flock, Ballymena.

The Forkins and Cherryvale Flocks have had outstanding success with Forkins Rock Solid selling to 65,000gns while Cherryvale’s highlight came with the sale of Nijinsky for 16,000gns.

Forkins and Cherryvale have seen ram lambs and gimmers consistently sell to four and five figure prices over the past few years with females sold breeding ram lambs to 6,500gns, and daughters to 7,000gns. 2014 saw 30 ram lambs selling to average over £1,000, with this year’s highlight claiming Champion at RUAS with a gimmer which later sold for £15,000 to Will Davies Usk Valley Flock. This year ewe lambs were first at all five shows entered. The Forkins Flock have had the pleasure of winning the NI Flock Competition 2010 and featured Reserve Champion Flock in 2013 and 2014, with the females taking the best pen of ewe lambs, in the relevant section, from 2008 to 2011 and 2014, and second in 2012 and 2013.

Stock rams have featured prominently in the flock competition taking Junior Stock Ram Champion 2012, Reserve Champion Senior Stock Ram 2012 and again this year achieving 2nd place with Duncryne Uber Cool in the Volac Senior Ram Champion. Forkins and Cherryvale Texels offer buyers the opportunity to purchase from 20 gimmers from well-established female lines within the flocks.

The gimmers are in lamb to Duncryne Uber Cool, an already proven sire. Also a very promising new stock ram used is Teiglum Vigilante, bringing breeding from the heart of Teiglums best families, he was purchased jointly in Lanark 2014 for £3500.

The Ballynahone Flock features highly in show ring successes with the Flock lifting Championship and Reserve Championship rosettes at shows across Northern Ireland.

Success has followed through to the sales ring with Ballynahone gimmers and ram lambs selling at four figures including Ballynahone Top Gun and Ballynahone Trademark. Ballynahone Texels features regularly in the NI flock competition winning the large pen of ewe lambs; taking second place in the large section of the competition and claiming reserve overall championship in 2012. The flock are also proud to be joint owners of Knock Travis, winning Junior Stock Ram 2012. In the Volac Texel Show Flock competition 2012 Ballynahone won the champion senior ewe award and were placed third overall.

The flock was awarded in 2013 1st and 2nd prize places in the shearling ewe classes; first prize ewe lamb; reserve female champion and reserve overall champion at the RUAS Balmoral. Ballynahone Texels are offering the majority of this year’s gimmer crop, with gimmers from the best families within the flock represented, including the same family as the RUAS Champions in 2003 and 2011.

Individuals from this family include 11,000gns and 5,000gns gimmers from Tamnamoney, Ballynahone Rambo (9,500gns), Ballynahone Beyonce (8,500gns), and the gimmer sold to 8,000gns Northern Stars in recent years.

Tamnamoney Texels, another Flock of the Year winner, has consistently bred Texels for commercial and pedigree markets. Sales from the flock have produced excellent prices peaking at 22,000gns for Tamnamoney Lynbrook, with consistent year on year sales reaching four figures.

In recent years Tamnamoney Ned and Tamnamoney Rob Roy have featured as sires of Lanark top prices and champions while a Tamnamoney ewe produced the top price ram lamb in 2011 selling at 46,000gns. This year proved another successful year for the Tamnamoney bloodlines, with one of the highlights for the Flock proving Tamnamoney stock is bred to breed with Knapp Vicious Sid, a son of Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold, selling for the top price lamb in 2014 at 145,000gns in Lanark Scottish National Sale.

Tamnamoney gimmers have constantly sold well with gimmers in recent years reaching four figure prices, with sales in 2011 breaking the NI female record price at the Northern Stars Sale at 11,000gns. This year gimmers are in lamb to Sportsman’s Scania, Duncryne Uber Cool, Oldfield United Star, Knock Travis and Teiglium Vigilante.

Sportsman’s Scania daughters have previously sold to a top price of 11,000gns for the Carlisle Champion 2013 while Castlecairn Va Va Voom who sold to 38,000gns in Carlisle 2014 was out of a Sportsman Scania daughter. This year Tamnamoney offers 24 select in lamb gimmers for sale, with an opportunity to purchase from the same family as Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold.

The Clougher Flock, established since the early eighties, has also enjoyed successes in the show and sales rings. Clougher Texels are rarely out of the awards in the NI Flock Competition taking the Championship four years in a row from ‘99 – 2002, 1st place in the large section in 2004, 2005 and 2008 and lifting the 2nd prize in this class in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

2012 saw the flock lifting the best pen of six ewe lambs. Clougher was awarded 1st place for the Best Senior Stock Ram, Braehead The Real McCoy in 2013 and claimed third place in the Junior Stock Ram 2014 with Kiltariff Vigilante. The flock is well known for its show ring successes including lifting the Female Texel Championship in 2009 at the RUAS.

Clougher has had ram lambs sold to tops of 18,000, however it is the sound commercial attributes within the flock that have allowed it to return good averages for commercial sheep throughout NI and in Lanark and Carlisle. Clougher ewes have sold to a top price of 2,600gns with many producing lambs which have left a positive mark within the breed.

The guest consignor is Andrew Kennedy of the Maineview Flock, Ballymena, established in 1996. The flock has grown over the years with purchases of elite females from renowned flocks locally and nationally.

The flock has enjoyed show success lifting the championships at major and local shows and notably with Sweetwall Gabarit winning the RUAS male championship and Interbreed pairs in recent years. Maineview was named the NI flock of the year in 2007 and has won the TYB ram lamb class in 2013 and placed second in 2014.

Early success was with Maineview Enhancer sold for 2.900gns and Maineview Lionheart selling for 5,200gns to the noted Bailey’s flock which bred Bailey’s Moneymaker sold for 38,000 euros and Baileys Mega sold for 18,000 euros. A Maineview Lionheart gimmer was second top priced in lamb gimmer sold at Northern Stars sale in 2012 for 8,500gns. Lambs at the premier sales this year averaged 1,100gns finding homes in pedigree flocks.

Maineview offers gimmers from the heart of the flock, with pedigrees from modern and influential sires and in lamb to very exciting bloodlines.

The Northern Stars sale is an excellent opportunity to upgrade or indeed start a flock with a selection of quality ewes, in-lamb to a number of proven sires with Saturday 20th December promising to be an exciting opportunity to invest in progeny from some of the top breeding lines in Northern Ireland.
