Over 400 piglets killed in Strabane fire

Hundreds of pigs have died in a major fire at a farm in Strabane.

A total of 420 piglets nd 32 of sows were killed in the blaze, which broke out on a farm on the Melmount Road this morning.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said that dozens of firemen were involved in tackling the blaze, which they were alerted to just before 5.40am.

A spokesman for the Fire & Rescue Service said six appliances have been involved in tackling the blaze including a Command Support Unit.

He added that two sheds housing pigs were damaged in the blaze, but fire fighters managed to stop it spreading to four other units on the farm.

A large number of other piglets and sows were rescued.

Two Fire & Rescue Service units remain at the scene this morning.
