To celebrate the 100th Annual Mullahead & District Ploughing Match, the Society is aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Draught Horses Ploughing Simultaneously’.
If the record attempt is successful all competitors will share in the title and become World Record Holders. As this year marks the Centenary of the popular event the Society are hoping to have 50 pairs of horses competing - 100 horses to mark each of the 100 years.
Kenny Gracey, chairman of Mullahead & District Ploughing Society commented that this feat could only be achieved at Mullahead.
He explained: “The match is the largest one day event of its kind in the UK and year on year we have huge support from competitors from all over Ireland and also the mainland. To have that number of horses ploughing simultaneously in one place will be a unique achievement and spectacle.”
The annual event, held on the Richardson’s Estate, Portadown, attracts 120 competitors in conventional ploughing classes and plays host to the 15th Ulster Horse Ploughing Championships (sponsored by Bank of Ireland), as well as the 13th All Ireland Ferguson Ploughing Championships. Another big attraction is the fiercely competitive Tractor Pull.
Tesco NI, the event’s major sponsor will be bringing the ever popular “Tesco Tent”, full of delicious wares from their primary food producers. New for 2015 is the “Fashion at Mill Farm” event, an exciting fashion show, showcasing the best of local fashion retailers.
The event is supported by Armagh City & District Council, Banbridge District Council and Craigavon Borough Council.
To mark the milestone of the 100th Match, the society is holding a Centenary Launch Celebration event in Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre on Friday 23rd January 2015. This will take the form of a four course banquet meal, event presentation, guests and entertainment from the popular comedian William Caulfield.Tickets are available to purchase at a cost of £25 by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org or William McCracken Jnr on 07725216960.
