Records smashed at Christmas show at Hilltown

Records were smashed at a spectacular Christmas Show at Hilltown on Saturday.

A packed gallery greeted auctioneers Ciaran Laverty and Gerry Campbell as they conducted the selling of the prize winners selected by judge of the event Mr Gareth Corrie. Indeed the highlight was the Housewife’s Choice belonging to Arthur Callaghan, Kilkeel a Charolais weighing 590kg, after frantic bidding she was knocked down at £3100 to Milestone Supermarket, Rathfriland. The supreme champion and first prize beef heifer was a stylish black Limousin heifer from William and James Herdman, Dromore scaling 692kg she sold for £1500 to James Annett. The reserve champion also came from the Herdman farm, another Charolais 616kg selling to Corrie Meats. Following the Housewife’s Choice in the prices was the first prizewinning suckler heifer from Leo Fearon, Rostrevor, another Charolais scaling 520kgs she sold for £1520 to James Cunningham Butchers. The fourth prize suckler heifer from Colm Farrell, Rostrevor sold £1020 for 302kg. The beef bullock class was won by Henry McGrath, Katesbridge, a 756kg Simmental he sold for £1400 to James Annett. Second place went to a 628kg Limousin from W and J Herdman selling for £1300. The first prize weanling bullock was presented by Joe Doyle, Greencastle a Limousin scaling 456kg he sold for £1000. Best fat cow was presented by Peter Farnon, Hilltown, and sold for £1100. The young handlers was won by Peter M Fegan, Rostrevor his 390kg Limousin heifer sold for £1100 to judge Gareth Corrie.

Weanling heifers: Rostrevor farmer 520k at £1520 (first prize); Rostrevor farmer 302k at £1020 (fourth prize); Hilltown farmer 302k at £760; Mayobridge farmer 302k at £750; Hilltown farmer 276k at £750, 266k at 3745, 304k at £740, 284k at £740; Hilltown farmer 286k at £735, 310k at £710.

Beef heifers: Dromore farmer 692k at £1500 (overall champion), 616k at £1460 (reserve champion); Kilkeel farmer 590k at £3100 (Housewife’s Choice); Hilltown farmer 694k at £1350 (fifth prize), 700k at £1300 (fourth prize); Katesbridge farmer 642k at £1330; Tassagh farmer 720k at £1300 (sixth prize); Katesbridge farmer 560k at £1200; Rostrevor farmer 552k at £1200.

Weanling bullocks: Greencastle farmer 456k at £1000 (first prize), 434k at £900 (third prize); Mayobridge farmer 356k at £940 (second prize); Carmeen farmer 382k at £940 (fourth prize), 338k at £880; Rostrevor farmer 376k at £885; Ballynahinch farmer 422k at £850; Rostrevor farmer 334k at £830, 352k at £825; Hilltown farmer 352k at £825, 346k at £820, 260k at £730; Mayobridge farmer 334k at £815, 324k at £815, 380k at £805.
