Margaret Ritchie MP has secured EFRA Secretary of State’s commitment to take the case for NI Pork exports directly to her Chinese counterpart.
Speaking after meeting with Secretary of State for EFRA, Liz Truss MP, the MP for South Down said: “Secretary of State Truss and I discussed the continuing campaign to open the Chinese market to NI pork products and how progress was made back in April 2015 when Chinese officials visited NI pork plants to undertake their inspections. Secretary of State Truss assured me that the feedback from these inspections was being pursued by British Embassy officials in Beijing.
“In response to the case I have continually made that this is an urgent matter for the NI meat export trade, and that we here in Northern Ireland rely heavily on our export markets, Secretary of State Truss has agreed to take the case for Northern Ireland’s pork industry direct to her Chinese counterpart when she visits China next month.
“I am assured my Secretary of State Truss’s commitment. I will continue to pursue this until a satisfactory outcome is reached and the pork export market to China re-opened and economic benefit brought to our agri-food industry.”
