Kilrea YFC have brought to a close their activities for the Winter Season, during which they competed in the various competitions on offer, including their very commendable Arts Festival performance “Horse Play” produced by Janice Irwin.
Thanks must go to Janice, to choreographers Lorraine Gordon and Charlotte Linton, to pianist Florence Woodburn, drummers Jeffrey and Lauren Milligan and to all who assisted in various ways to help get the performance together. Also to Kilrea Primary School for the use of their premises for the many extra nights for practice.
Keeping with the theme of entertainment, Kilrea YFC took to the air waves as part of Radio Ulster’s programme Culchie and Proud! where some club members put forward an excellent debate in favour of the theme against Newtownards YFC.
Certainly much craic was had during the recording of this and also for the parents and listeners who tuned in to hear.
Kilrea finished their year with their annual Parents and Friends Night held in Kilrea Presbyterian Church Hall. A comprehensive account of the year’s activities was provided by outgoing club secretary Zara Leslie and trophies and proficiencies distributed to successful club members by Mrs. Pearl Hutchinson, who acted as guest speaker for the occasion (with many witty comments from her husband, Creighton!)
Following this the club members provided entertainment for the audience.
Thanks to Kilrea Presbyterian Church for allowing the club the use of their hall for the occasion, to Pearl Hutchinson for acting as guest speaker and to all involved in assisting with the entertainment.
At the County Londonderry Efficiency Awards Kilrea achieved second in Best overall club and Sara Mulholland was Best Treasurer.
As they move now into their Summer Season under the leadership of Adam McCormick and Kerri Thompson as secretary three teams took part in the County Londonderry quiz where they had great success, being placed first, third and fourth. Congratulations to the winning team of Adam Alexander, Ellen Alexander, Abbie Canning, Timmy Davidson and David Linton.
Next on the agenda was the Dairy Judging competition where some of Kilrea’s member competed. Well done to Robert Sloan and Timmy Davidson for getting placed.
The club took part in the One Act Drama competition with their performance of “Where there’s a will...” and although no awards were gained on this occasion, the club put on a very amusing and enjoyable performance, evident from the audience reaction at Ballymoney High School. Thanks go to Rosemary Cooper and Leanne Mark for producing this.
Club officials and members attended the Annual Conference and AGM.
Congratulations to Michael Stewart who was placed 1st in the grassland section of Ulster Young Farmer competition, to Sara Mulholland placed third Best Treasurer in NI and to Robert Sloan who is now on the executive committee.
Some Kilrea YFC members were taking part in a street collection for Friends of the Cancer Centre. Thanks to the members who assisted with this collection and to the public and motorists for giving so generously. The collection totalled £1.104... and 15 euro! The club were indeed very happy to assist for such a worthy cause.
Boys and Girls teams have been and are continuing to take part in various sports nights held by other clubs and also had teams competing at Balmoral. Once again much fun and success was had.
If any club member wishes to take part let the club officials know. Also anyone not a member of the club who wishes to take part in the activities, please get in touch via the facebook page (or simply speak to a current member), if you wish to join. Contact the club phone at 07706 700 236.
Some members, namely Ellen Alexander, Timmy Davidson, Thomas Gordon, Jill Halliday, David Linton and Amy Thompson (together with some Randalstown and Ahoghill YFC members) will be continuing with Duke of Edinburgh Silver activities with camping Expeditions being held in The Mournes during the summer months.
As this is Kilrea YFC 70th anniversary year other events will be planned so be sure to keep in touch with club leader Adam or secretary Kerrie and on the club facebook page. Former Club Members – feel free to keep in touch or get involved in some of the activities.
