Support for migrant fishermen

SDLP MP for South Down, Margaret Ritchie, has met with Immigration Minister James Brokenshire MP to argue for clearer regulation on international seafarers working in Northern Ireland’s fishing industry.

Ms Ritchie has said: “The reality today is that the fishing industry in the north of Ireland is increasingly reliant on the labour of international seafarers who come from abroad to work on fishing vessels on the Irish Sea. The law must reflect this reality and I believe the British Government should follow the example of the south of Ireland by regulating the working environment for these fishermen. This would give the owners of fishing vessels security over the working status of their crew and enable iron-tight, enforceable protections for migrants’ welfare at work.”
