The deadline for registering your interest for the 25th annual UFU silage competition is fast approaching. The annual UFU silage competition, sponsored by Ecosyl (Volac) and John Thompson & Sons, aims to find Northern Ireland’s top silage producers.
UFU President Barclay Bell said: “Good silage making has always been a key element of farming in Northern Ireland, where we rely heavily on our ability to grow forage for our livestock sector. Entries will be judged in three classes: dairy, beef & sheep and alternative forage. Judging focuses on a range of important silage making components including the quality of the silage, good environmental measures and a good approach to farm safety. UFU members can enter up to two classes, one for grass silage and one for alternative forage. There will be a range of prizes at group level and the overall winners will receive their prizes at an awards ceremony next spring.”
Barclay continued: “Last year saw a record number of entries from our members and it was a pleasure to see our group winners and national winners being honoured for their professional approach to silage making. Our silage competition encourages excellence and healthy competition among our members and we hope to see as many entries as possible submitted.”
Speaking on behalf of sponsors John Thompson & Sons and Ecosyl (Volac), Jonny McCaughan and Derek Nelson said: “We are delighted to be once again sponsoring the UFU silage competition. The competition is about promoting excellence among producers and of course good quality forage is key to a successful livestock industry in Northern Ireland. We hope to see as many farmers as possible enter and we look forward to meeting farmers in the weeks ahead as judging gets underway.”
UFU members who do not want to miss out need to contact their local group office before Tuesday 1st November to register their interest.
