Man, rescued by firefighters from blaze at NI flats, taken to hospital

A man, rescued by firefighters using a ladder from a block of flats in Craigavon, was taken to hospital, .

The alarm was raised just after 8am that Aldervale Flats in Craigavon was on fire.

Three appliances from Portadown Fire Station, two from Lurgan Fire Station and one from Armagh Fire station attended the incident.

A spokesperson for teh NI Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a block of flats.

“A member of our Regional Control Centre provided fire survival guidance to a member of the public as Firefighters were dispatched.

“One male casualty was rescued from his flat using a ladder and was then taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets and one covering jet to extinguish the fire.

“The incident was dealt with by 9.05am and the scene was handed over to the PSNI.

“Advice was also given to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive on making the building safe.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition.”

One resident said they were not permitted to return to their flats to get belongings.

He said it appears the residents will have to rehoused.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives are investigating a fire at a block of flats at Aldervale in Craigavon on Monday 8th February.

“The fire is believed to have been started in a bin outside one of the flats at around 8am on Monday morning, and caused smoke damage to several of the properties.

“A number of people were evacuated from the flats whilst emergency services dealt with the incident and one man was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, which is being treated as arson at this time, and anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 258 of 8/2/21.
