MBE for director and longest-serving employee of Kilwaughter Minerals

A Larne businessman named in the New Year Honours list has highlighted the importance of corporate social responsibility.

John McDowell, director of Kilwaughter Minerals Limited (founded 1939), was awarded an MBE for services to industry and charity in Northern Ireland.

John commenced work at Kilwaughter Minerals limited in 1964 and continues working there today as the longest-serving employee. His vision and foresight have overseen continuous investment in the business to allow it to grow into a world-class manufacturing facility employing 180 people.

The principal markets supplied today are Agriculture and Building. In agriculture many grades of Kilwaughter Lime are sold throughout Ireland as a calcium supplement and a soil conditioner. The Brand K Rend is just one of a range of coloured dry bagged renders for sealing the exterior of buildings. It is delivered throughout Ireland and UK.

With John’s direction, Kilwaughter has supported numerous local charities. He believes this is an important part of the company corporate social responsibility. Recently, a donation to Queen’s University Belfast has supported its Pathway Programme to provide bursaries to students helping them through their education.

He has also funded two rounds of medical research into heart rhythms at Queen’s.

John commented on his “surprise” at receiving an MBE though he was “pleased and honoured” with the recognition.
