Suckler calf sales get off to a great start at Rathfriland

The first weekly suckler calf sale on Monday evening got off to a great start.

A top price of £980 for males and £960 for females from Ballyward estate. A Shinn farmer reached £970 and a Portaferry farmer sold at £850. A South Armagh farmer reached 287.6p/k for a pen of April 2016 born Lims e.g., 226k @ £650 or 287.6p/k, 240k @ £650 or 270.8p/k. A Clanmaghery farmer reached 280 pence per kilo for 288k @ £805 and 248k @ £700 or 282p/k and over 260 pence per kilo for 18.

The first sizable entry of suckler calves of the season at Friday’s weekly sale sold in a blistering trade.

A Ballyroney farmer reached 305p/k for a 274k Ch male @ £835 and a 256k lot @ £770 or 301p/k. A Clough farmer sold a 216k Ch @ £590 or 273p/k. An Edenagarry farmer sold 10 Lims to 258p/k for 294k @ £760 with 328k @ £800 etc. A Ballinaskeagh farmer sold 6 strong Lim and Ch to £1040, £1030 and £1000 etc. A Castlewellan farmer sold a 298k Lim @ £750 or 252p/k. Store heifers sold to £1045 for a 566k Ch from Begney. A good entry of bullocks easily cleared up to £1170 for a 574k Angus from Dromara. A Lessize farmer reached £1120 for a 640k FCK. Many more bullocks at over the £1000 mark. Fat cows to £1005 and springers to £1040 for a Clough farmer. Dropped calf numbers were reduced on the week with a top of £370 for a Sim from Newry.

Lambs trade tended to be easier on Tuesday evening with a top of £81 for 25k from Bryansford. Several pens of 26k to 27k sold at £80 per head for Castlewellan, Poyntzpass and Hilltown farmers. Ballyroney, Downpatrick and Hilltown farmers all sold 24k to 25k at £79. Fat ewes sold to £80 with several lots at £76 with the main trade for the night from £60 to £70.
