The Ards Group are enjoying the 2015/2016 winter programme which is now underway.
It was great to see so many members participating in the group’s annual cereal competition and congratulations to all the winners. Judges from outside the group again commented on the high standards that the Ards Group have become renowned for and hope to see it continue in the future.
Congratulations to the group winners, John and David Mathews from Bangor Six Road Ends as they won the Winter Wheat section. The group’s Spring Barley was won by David Magill from the Mid Ards branch. Winter Barley was won by Raymond Wilson from the Upper Ards branch, congratulations to Raymond who was then placed first overall in the Northern Ireland competition.
The oats competition was won by Wesley Henderson from the Bangor Six Roads End branch.
We held our first Winter Programme meeting in the Wildfowler in Greyabbey, the guest speakers for the evening were Paul McHenry and Ciaran Cunningham from DARD.
Paul spoke about the benefits of likeminded farmers joining discussion groups as a good method of sharing ideas and farming practices. Ciaran then continued the meeting by talking about the capital grants scheme that will hopefully be announced in 2016. The topic proved very popular and it gave members the opportunity to express their opinions on the matter.
We look forward to holding a joint meeting with our local young farmers clubs in December which will be held in the Carrowdore Community Centre on the 8th December, we would urge as many members and family members to attend, our main speaker for the evening is Simon Best, ex Ireland and Ulster Rugby player.
Simon will be there to talk about both his rugby and farming careers to date. In attendance we will also have a NFU Mutual Risk Management Specialist to talk about current safety practices on farms which is currently very topical and will hopefully provide an insight to members on what health and safety opportunities are available to members.
