The Lagan Group would like to congratulate Reggie and Beattie Lilburn on winning the recent group Winter Barley competition.
With their field being placed third in the national competition, the Lilburn’s are continuing their success having already won the national silage competition in March. There was good group support for this year’s Winter Barley competition and a mention should also be given to Brian Gregson and Tom Wells who were placed a close second equal.
Entry for the Oats, Winter Wheat and Spring Barley competitions will soon be closing and members are encouraged to contact the local office as soon as possible to enter their fields for judging in mid-July.
The Lagan Group ended their 2014/15 winter programme with a fantastic talk from former Ulster and Ireland rugby player Simon Best. Simon told stories from his rugby career, discussed his own experiences as a local farmer and raised awareness of Health and Safety on farms.
Simon is a supporter of the Farm Safety Partnership and has helped raise awareness of Health and Safety issues by opening his farm to the media. Simon encouraged members to take more time to think about safe practices of work and encouraged them to work with the HSENI to make the industry safer.
The group committee met recently to organise meetings and trips for the next winter programme. The programme is due to start in early September with a very interesting tour of JMW Farms Ltd in Armagh. The Group Managers would like to encourage all members to attend as many of the events as possible.
On 17th June a number of staff from the Lagan Group office took part in the Lisburn 10k run and half marathon. The office raised over £420 for ‘Cancer Fund for Children’ and would like to thank the members for their generous sponsorship.
