2014 has been a cracking year for the Armagh Down Group members.

Firstly, Ian Marshall and Ivor Ferguson were elected president and deputy president of the UFU respectively.

In October members Roy and David Harpur of Divernagh, Bessbrook were crowned Dairy Farmer of the year with our Group Chairman William Irvine being highly commended in the same category.

Our Winter Programme kicked off in September with a trip to the dairy unit at Greenmount and then on to the farm of Billy O’Kane at Crebilly Road, Ballymena. At Billy’s farm we had the opportunity to see first hand how he is achieving great results with the emphasis on easy management with specific importance put on breed selection.

Our most recent meeting was at the end of November with speakers from the HMRC and UFU the topic on the evening was ‘Are you Legal on the Road?’

This topic was selected to coincide with the launch of the UFU s new booklet ‘Agriculture and the Roads’. This booklet is available from your local office.

The next group meeting will be on the 29th January 2015 in the Mourne Country hotel with the topic for the evening is ‘Is Food really local?’ the speaker on the evening will be Mr Chris Elliott, Professor of Food Safety and Director of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast.

The Co Armagh Dinner Dance is to be held in the Canal Court on the 23rd January 2015. If you wish to attend please give the office a call.

The 2015 UFU Diary and wall planners are available at the Group Office, please call in and get one.

We would like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
