A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Tuesday that felled old buildings as well as new factories and warehouses in a swath of Italy north of Bologna. The quake, which followed a May 20 magnitude-6.0 quake in the same area, dealt another blow to one of the country's most productive regions at a time when Italy is struggling to restart its economy. They have praised their Italian member organisations for providing much needed food supplies and relief to the victims.

Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said in Brussels: “I am deeply saddened by the earthquake which hit Central Italy.

“Hundreds have been declared dead and many injured, starving and homeless.

“We offer our full solidarity with the Italian people and the national authorities at this time.

“I hope that sufficient aid and food supplies and relief will be made available to these victims to get them on their feet again.

“And I thank our Italian member organisations who are giving their full support to the victims during this crisis by providing them with a good range of nutritious food supplies, such as fruit and vegetables, dairy products, olive oil, meat, bread.

“They are also engaged in relief and accommodation, with the use of agricultural vehicles, bulldozors and tractors.”
