Stronger links with DEFRA is '˜fundamental' - MP

DEFRA Committee member and Upper Bann MP David Simpson has stated his vision to see closer engagement between DAERA and his DEFRA colleagues in Westminster.

Mr Simpson said: ”With our new DAERA Minister in place, we are provided with a new opportunity to rebuild a better working relationship with our counterparts in Westminster.

“With global market uncertainty and volatility in the market; it is vital that all regions within the UK work together for the common good of local farmers. I intend to meet with Minister McIlveen in the coming days and I will be liaising with her ahead of future meets with senior DEFRA officials.

“Important questions are being asked of Government following the referendum result and it is vital that as public representatives we ensure that the interests of Northern Ireland farmers are listened to during any negotiations. Both Minister McIlveen and I understand the huge challenges being faced, but we also recognise the opportunities that a Post-Brexit Britain can grasp. Our vision to see a stronger industry is clear, but the fundamental need for a stronger link between DAERA and DEFRA is of central importance to us both.”
