Blair calls for UK Government to step up support for farmers

Alliance Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Spokesperson John Blair MLA has said that his party stands with farmers during the current energy crisis, as Alliance makes the case to the UK Government for interventions that will offer relief to farm businesses.

“Alliance recognises that farmers are struggling with the increased costs of energy, fuel and fertiliser caused by Trump’s war with Iran. It is the UK Government that controls many of the levers that can offer the most direct and effective means of assistance and we must be a united front in calls for support,” said John Blair MLA.

“My party is calling for a reduction in fuel duty and VAT on agricultural diesel, as well as an increased windfall tax on the profits of energy companies. Our MP, Sorcha Eastwood, is making that case in Westminster, whilst the DAERA Minister has joined the UFU’s calls for the Prime Minister to take action to relieve the pressure on agriculture.

“Minister Muir has confirmed that existing Farm Sustainability Payments will be made to farm businesses again this year to the tune of £236m, as a safety net payment intended to help build resilience. He is also exploring the possibility of potential further support in liaison with the UFU.

“In the meantime, Alliance stands with farmers as they endure this crisis and will continue to push the UK Government, who have the financial firepower to provide the additional new support that is desperately needed.”
