Calf Health workshop at Rashee Farm

Forty farmers attended a workshop organised by Patrick Finnegan MRCVS of Farm Vet Services at Rashee Farm, Ballyclare owned by the Patterson Family

The guest speaker at the event was Dr John Cook from World Wide Sires.

Dr Cook spoke about the importance of ensuring the healthiest herd of dairy cows to produce quality milk begins with the calf.

John highlighted that getting the basics right 100% of the time gives the baby calf the best chance of achieving the correct growth rates throughout her journey to the parlour, including getting top quality colostrum within the first few hours after calving, keeping clean and hygienic buckets/teat feeders and bedding.

Patrick Finnegan highlighted that following a comprehensive vaccination program with the heifer calves was of the utmost importance in helping to prevent issues with pneumonia.

On the topic of calf scours, Patrick recommended consultation with your vet on the best treatment and the use of the Techmix range of calf products to aid recovery.

Both WWS and FVS want to thank the Patterson family for their hospitality and allowing the group to see their superb new calf facilities.
