Milk price crisis '“ Strike meeting date set for November 14

William Taylor FFA NI Co-Ordinator, said: “The abysmal base price of approximately 20p per litre, paid by virtually all Co-ops purchasing milk from Northern Ireland’s dairy farmers last month, was a disgrace.

“This is verified by the fact that GB prices were approximately 25p per litre and are rising, Southern Ireland’s prices were approximately 25 cents per litre plus and the GB spot price ranged from 30p per litre to over 40p per litre with organic milk hitting a high of 52p per litre.”

The planned meeting in Cookstown is open to all dairy farmers and the agenda is as follows: The current true cost of milk production – how it can be achieved and maintained; The pros and cons of a milk strike.

A vote will be taken at the end of the meeting to decide whether to strike.

A spokesperson added: “Please come along and see what you could do to help your Farmgate milk price. After all, 32.5p per litre was paid for milk in 1987! Together we can obtain our fair share of the financial ‘milk cake’.”
