Native and Traditional Breeds Weekend at Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

The Ulster Folk & Transport Museums Farm Manager Robert Berry gathers the museums six week old piglets ahead of its Native and Traditional Breeds Weekend this weekend (20th and 21st August). The Ulster Folk & Transport Museums Discovery Farm continues its celebration of farming animals throughout the summer with the annual Native and Traditional Breeds Weekend, taking place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August and organised in partnership with the Traditional Farm Livestock Foundation. The event gives visitors the opportunity to admire the livestock that resides on the farm including traditional breeds of cattle, horses, pigs, poultry and sheep.

The event gives visitors the opportunity to admire the livestock that resides on the farm including traditional breeds of cattle, horses, pigs, poultry and sheep.
There will also be a range of Northern Ireland’s more unusual breeds trotting and dandering around the museum including Irish Moiled cattle, long horned cattle, Clydesdale and Irish Draught horses and saddle back pigs.

On Saturday, there will be a performance by popular Co Down band Hair of the Dog and there will also be Irish dancing at Ballycultra Town.

On Sunday, visitors can browse the craft stands and bring their furry – and not so furry – friends to a Pet Show in the afternoon.
Robert Berry, Farm Manager at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum commented: “We always look forward to this annual event. Not only is it good fun, it also celebrates our rich farming and rural history.
“The traditional breeds which will be at the museum this weekend have been important to the farming community here for generations so this family event is an ideal way to admire these superb animals and recognise their role in our history.”
