New AFBI surveys will gather information on fruit growers’ pesticide needs

New surveys are being sent to top and soft fruit growers from the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) to gather information on what pesticides producers need.

Fruit growers often need specific pesticides because their crops are particularly vulnerable to fungal diseases and pests.

The information collected by AFBI will give a better picture of the challenges growers face and the pesticides they need so that their requirements are properly understood.

Letters are being sent to randomly selected growers across Northern Ireland this month.

Data from the surveys is used in an annual report on pesticide usage in Northern Ireland. The data also feeds into a wider survey on the use of pesticides across the UK.

Letters sent to growers will contain a paper survey form and return envelope.

The survey is not available online, however, growers can submit their own digital records and photos of records to [email protected].

All data collected by AFBI is strictly confidential. AFBI may ring growers to gather further information, however, no information on individual growers or their use of pesticides will be shared with DAERA.

Dr Daniel Leybourne, principal scientist at AFBI, said: “Every year, AFBI carries out surveys into pesticide usage.

“This year, top and soft fruit growers are being asked about how they use pesticides.

“The results of the survey will allow us to collate accurate data on pesticide use, helping us identify the needs of Northern Ireland’s food production sector.

“Both top fruit and soft fruit growers have specific pesticide needs, arising from the high risk of fungal and insect-borne diseases.

“As such, data on the problems faced when growing these crops and the pesticide requirements is essential to ensure the needs of growers are known.

“Northern Ireland growers have to adhere to both UK and European Union regulations around pesticides and it is hugely important that local growers’ voices are heard.

“As many growers as possible should complete the survey so we can better reflect their pesticide needs.”

If growers have any questions about the survey, or need help filling it in, please contact AFBI via the details in the survey letters or email [email protected].
