NI Charolais Club celebrates another successful year at annual prize-giving

The Northern Ireland Charolais Club celebrated the achievements of its members at its prize-giving dinner and dance, held at the Greenvale Hotel, Cookstown.

The evening brought together breeders, exhibitors, families and supporters to reflect on another successful year for the breed, recognising achievements in the show ring, at society sales and through youth competitions.

Club chairman Harry Heron welcomed guests and congratulated members on their achievements throughout the season, commending their continued commitment to promoting the Charolais breed across Northern Ireland.

Vice-chairman Thomas Devine provided an update on the activities of NI Charolais Youth, highlighting the club's ongoing investment in developing the next generation of breeders and exhibitors.

Recognising youth achievement

NI Charolais Youth enjoyed another outstanding year, culminating in a 22-strong team travelling to Scotland to compete at the British Charolais Cattle Society (BCCS) Youth Weekend.

Success began at Northern Ireland level, where Sophie McWilliams and Jack McWilliams shared first place in the novice section. Finn Devine won the junior section, with Danny Devine taking second place. Zac Bothwell led the intermediate section, followed by Caroline McConnell and Mya Alexander, while James Morrison topped the senior section ahead of Matthew Cochrane and George Hadnett.

Members also excelled at the BCCS finals, with Sophie McWilliams and Jack McWilliams both securing second place in the novice section.

Zac Bothwell claimed third place in the intermediate individual competition, while James Morrison achieved second place in the senior individual standings and teamed up with Mollie Cochrane to secure second place in the team competition.

Matthew Cochrane also finished third in the senior individual section.

Celebrating success across the breed

The awards also recognised members' achievements at leading shows, championships and sales throughout the season, including success at Balmoral Show, the Northern Ireland Charolais Club National Show at Clogher, the Spring and Autumn Show and Sales, the Stars of the Future Calf Show and the RUAS Beef and Lamb Championships.

While not all award winners were able to attend the event, their accomplishments formed an important part of the evening's celebrations.

Looking ahead

Reflecting the depth of quality within Northern Ireland's Charolais herds and the enthusiasm of its young breeders, the awards highlighted a breed that continues to thrive. With continued success at local and national shows, pedigree sales and youth competitions, the club looks forward to building on that momentum in the year ahead.
