North West Mountain Rescue Team secures National Lottery Funding

North West Mountain Rescue Team (NWMRT) is delighted to have been awarded £9,315 grant funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The funding has enabled the Team to purchase range of new swift-water rescue equipment including dry-suits, specialist boots, helmets, throw-lines and flotation devices. This equipment will significantly enhance the Team’s ability to respond safely and effectively to incidents involving rivers, lakes and flooding, while expanding its search and rescue capabilities in water environments.

This investment is particularly important given Northern Ireland’s extensive network of waterways, including the Fermanagh Lakelands, and the growing popularity of water based recreational activities.

NWMRT is 100% voluntary organisation, providing a 24/7/365 search and rescue service across almost all of Northern Ireland, with the exception of the Mourne Mountains area. The Team provides specialist search and rescue assistance to people who are lost, missing, injured or otherwise in difficulty in remote and hostile environments, including in and around water.

Speaking about the funding, NWMRT Team Leader, Andrew Kelly, said: “The Team is extremely grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for this grant, which has enabled us to purchase much needed equipment to support our operations and enhance our capabilities.

"In recent months 13 Members have successfully completed the Swiftwater Rescue Module 3 Course to the DEFRA (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) Technician Standard, delivered by WRTUK. This funding will help ensure that our equipment meets the required DAERA (Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs) standards.

"As a 100% voluntary organisation, the Team relies on grant funding and generous donations from the public to continue to provide this vital search and rescue service.”
