2021 focus is on climate change

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) says the focus for 2021 is on tackling climate change as the UK prepares to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow this November.

The UK agriculture industry is continuing its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions highlighting its importance as a key part of the climate change solution and through a series of events occurring throughout the year, the UFU will be promoting the work that its farmers are doing.

UFU deputy president David Brown said: “Our climate change themed events will follow on from the successful climate change competition that we ran in conjunction with the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster. It highlighted some of the many ways our young farmers who are the future of the industry, are addressing climate change.

“In Northern Ireland (NI) more research and data on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions is needed and in our first meeting for members, we will be discussing a recent report commissioned by the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in livestock. It highlights the challenges in meeting UK net zero targets for livestock farms.”

The first virtual event taking place on Tuesday 9 March, will feature Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) director of sustainable agri-food sciences division, Dr Elizabeth Magowan. She is one of the co-ordinators of the report and will take members through its key findings. Steven Morrison head of livestock production sciences branch at AFBI, will follow with an overview of how carbon calculators work.
