Buying a pup for Christmas – advice

If Santa brings a new pup to your home this Christmas, are you fully prepared?

This year saw a huge rise in the number of people buying a pup during the COVID pandemic.

Concern is high among animal welfare charities that pups bought for Christmas could increase the number of dogs entering rescue centres due to owners being unprepared for the responsibility of their new addition.

Training provider Our Family Dog has developed the ‘Getting a Puppy’ course in partnership with Lantra.

This FREE, online course has been designed to help people make better decisions when getting a pup. The aim of the course is to bridge the gap between the expectations and reality of dog ownership, so that people are better prepared for what’s in store and can decide if they are ready to commit to raising a pup.

Designed for first time dog owners, this short course is suitable for all the family to learn about life with a dog. The course will take two to three hours to complete, but you can do it at your own pace.

The course will cover basic care, including what to feed and how to manage your puppy’s weight, training needs and how to find a dog trainer, and what to do if you experience problem behaviour.

The development of the course has been supported by clinical animal behaviourist and dog trainer, Natalie Light, to ensure that the advice reflects the latest evidence and best practice in dog behaviour and training.

There is a fun quiz at the end of the course to test your knowledge. Having completed the course, you will receive a downloadable certificate.
