Doubles selling to a top of £300 at Markethill Mart sheep sale

An entry of 1540 sheep in Markethill on Wednesday 3rd March saw a further increase in the price of fat hoggets which returned probably the best trade ever seen at the mart.

Cull ewe trade was also improved and a full yard of breeding stock sold in a steady demand.

Good quality heavy hoggets sold steadily from 550p to 558p per kilo for 24k at £141 from a Tandragee farmer, followed by 587p per kilo for 24.2k at £142 each from a Belleeks producer.

In all, a total of 24 pens of heavy hoggets sold in excess of £140 each to a top of £144.50 each for 26 hoggets 26.3k from a Middletown producer.

Heavy horned hoggets sold to a top of 548p per kilo for 25.2k at £138 each.

Good quality middleweight hoggets sold from 560p to 627p per kilo for 22k at £138 each from a Newtownhamilton farmer followed by 598p per kilo for 22.4k at £134 each from a Hilltown producer.

Middleweight horned hoggets sold to a top of 576p per kilo 22.5k at £129.50 each.

Good quality stores sold to 592p per kilo for 19.1k at £113 each from a Hilltown farmer.

Main demand from 520p to 583p per kilo.

The 200 cull ewes sold in an improved trade with good quality ewes from £90 to and £140 each.

Plainer ewes from £70 to £85 each.

A very large entry of ewes and lambs sold in a steady demand with good quality Doubles selling to a top of £300 each followed by £295, £298, and £285 each.

Main demand for good quality doubles sold from £230 to £280 each.

Singles sold to a top of £290 each followed by £255 and £250 each.

All good quality singles from £180 to £235 each.
