Driving test priority for key workers

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has written a letter to Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, asking for priority to be given to key workers when theory and practical driving tests recommence.

UFU deputy president David Brown said: “We have received a high volume of calls from members and employers who need staff to complete theory and practical driving tests to carry out day to day activities on the farm. We fully understand the need to protect public health during the ongoing pandemic but when the economy starts to open again it is important that key workers get priority when booking tests as was the case in 2020.

Driving is a central part of working on-farm and having a suitable driving licence to carry out daily tasks is essential.”

Modern farm machinery has increased in size in recent years. Therefore, farmers and farm workers require a category B licence which allows them to drive a car and all tractors on public roads.

“A farmer or farm worker would struggle to manage the daily running of a farm without a category B licence. It allows them to drive to and from work, travel to check livestock or collect veterinary supplies.

“The slurry period opened at the beginning of February and silage season is only a few months away. Agricultural contractors and farmers will need additional staff with the correct licence to drive machinery on public roads. All of these activities are an essential part of producing high-quality nutritious food for consumers,” said Mr Brown.

In 2020, there was a dedicated email for key workers when booking their theory or practical driving tests. The UFU asks for this service to be made available again.

“Farmers and other key workers who needed to do their driving test used the priority booking service that was available last year, and our members found it very effective. We are disappointed that the priority booking service is no longer available and request that it is reopened as soon as possible,” said Mr Brown.
