DUP MP Carla Lockhart has urged farmers and farming families to exercise care and caution on farms in the coming weeks, particularly as more children are at home due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The Upper Bann Member of Parliament said: “Farmers are extremely busy at the moment with slurry spreading well underway, aided by the drier weather that we have been enjoying in recent days. Before long we will soon have a focus turning to silage.

“With these activities comes increased danger. The dangers around slurry are well documented and it is vital the farmers exercise caution, particularly around agitating slurry.

“We want to avoid tragedy and I would urge farmers to study the guidance available from the HSENI.

“Safety on farms is even more acute in light of the fact many more children are at home. Although farmers are key workers and can avail of school provision, many children are being kept at home and this adds to the dangers on family farms. Vigilance and safe play areas are vital,” she added.

“I want to thank our farming and agri-food sectors for all the work they are doing right now to feed the nation. Your efforts should not go unrewarded.

“However, we want safety to be paramount and my message is clear – stay safe on family farms.”
