During the winter months we have had a number of very successful events – without a doubt – this year has seen our largest turnout of members at our group meetings which is fantastic to see in our small, yet growing group!

Our Winter Programme kicked off with a fantastic trip to Devenish Farm and the lands at Dowth – special thanks to Dr John Gilliland for making the time to make our trip so enjoyable and informative. It was so interesting to see the work which is going on at this location and I think it’s fair to say that we all came home with a new perspective on a lot of aspects of farming.

Our group meetings saw visits from Dr Francis Lively from AFBI and Liam McCarthy, ABP’s supply chain manager talking to us about Beef research. We were also joined by David Wright from the Irish Farmers Journal who spoke to us around Brexit and what that may mean for the farming community. Also thanks to UFU President, Ivor Ferguson, for joining us at our AGM and giving us an update of the work being carried out by the UFU.

One of the highlights of our Winter Programme was most definitely our Christmas Breakfast, where we were joined by the legend that is Dr Rory Best – a fantastic morning, hearing about Rory’s farming and Rugby careers – we are extremely grateful to Rory for his time and enthusiasm in supporting our group!

Our final event of the year was a trip to AFBI – special thanks to all the staff and in particular Conrad Ferris for having us at AFBI. It was fantastic to see the work that goes on there and I think it’s fair to say that we all learned something or got some ideas which we could all take back to our own businesses.
