MLA praises Holywood couple’s dedication to preserving industrial and agricultural heritage

North Down MLA Stephen Dunne has paid tribute to the owners of a rare 1935 steam engine after viewing the magnificent machine at the recent Cultra Hillclimb event at the excellent surroundings of the Ulster Folk Museum.

Mr Dunne said: “It was a real privilege to see this beautifully preserved 90-year-old steam engine up close at the Cultra Hillclimb. The craftsmanship, engineering and history behind this remarkable machine are truly fascinating.

“I want to commend Henry and Caroline Crosslé for their dedication in preserving an important piece of our industrial and agricultural heritage. Historic vehicles such as this help bring the past to life for younger generations and ensure that valuable stories and traditions are not lost.

“The Ransomes Sims and Jefferies engine, built in Ipswich in 1935, has a rich history stretching from its early working life on farms in Co Wexford to becoming part of the steam preservation movement in Northern Ireland.

“It is wonderful that this engine continues to be enjoyed by the public almost a century after it was built. Events such as the Cultra Hillclimb provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our engineering heritage and showcase the dedication of enthusiasts who invest so much time and effort in maintaining these historic machines.

“I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the engine’s unique story. I would also like to commend the organisers of the Cultra Hillclimb, the TSCC for putting on another special event which is now firmly in the calendar of many motoring enthusiasts across Northern Ireland.”

Mr Dunne added that Northern Ireland has a proud industrial heritage and welcomed opportunities to promote and preserve historic vehicles and machinery for future generations.
