Rural Support celebrates Plough On Programme at special conference
Rural Support hosted a special celebration conference to mark the achievements of the Plough On programme, a unique initiative designed to support older male farmers aged 65 and over across Northern Ireland.
The conference brought together participants, supporters, stakeholders, and community representatives to reflect on the positive impact the programme has had in reducing social isolation, promoting wellbeing, and creating meaningful connections among older farmers.
Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, the Plough On programme has provided participants with regular opportunities to meet, socialise, and engage with others facing similar life experiences. Members attended either a local group meeting or organised outing each month, creating valuable opportunities for friendship, peer support, and community engagement.
Over the course of the programme, participants enjoyed a wide range of activities, educational talks, social events, and trips, helping them remain connected to their communities while improving confidence and wellbeing. For many participants, the monthly gatherings became an important source of support and companionship.

Speaking at the conference, Rural Support representatives praised the commitment of participants and acknowledged the significant role the programme has played in addressing loneliness and social isolation among older members of the farming community.
“The Plough On programme has shown just how important regular social connection can be for older farmers,” said Keelin Reilly, Rural Support chief executive.
“Many participants looked forward to their monthly meetings and outings, building friendships and support networks that have had a lasting impact on their wellbeing.”
The event also marked the conclusion of the current National Lottery Community Fund grant that has supported the programme.

While celebrating the success of Plough On, Rural Support highlighted the need to secure new funding and sponsorship to ensure these vital opportunities can continue for older farmers in the future.
With rural isolation continuing to be a significant challenge for many older farmers, Rural Support is now seeking sponsors, funding partners, and supporters who share its commitment to improving rural wellbeing and sustaining community-based initiatives.
Businesses, organisations, charitable trusts, and individuals interested in supporting the future of the Plough On groups are encouraged to get in touch to discuss sponsorship and partnership opportunities.
