Young farmers set to tackle the ‘Big 600 mile challenge’

During the height of lockdown, members from Kilraughts YFC decided to take an alternative approach to charity fundraising due to the cancelation of their usual fundraising events - tractor runs, treasure hunts and charity barbecue.

The club tasked members to participate in a BIG 600 miles challenge! The 600 miles comes from the distance between each Young Farmers’ Club in Northern Ireland.

The challenge was created for members to walk, run and cycle a total of 600 miles for the Yellow Wellies, ‘Mind Your Head’ campaign. This campaign was started with the aim of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in the agriculture industry.

Once Kilraughts smashed their 600 miles target, the club then nominated a neighbouring Young Farmers’ Club to take on the challenge.

Five clubs participated (Kilraughts YFC, A&M YFC, Collone YFC, Kilrea YFC and Finvoy YFC) covering over 2,000 miles and raising an amazing total of £3,675 .

Collone YFC said: “Mental health for our farmers is extremely important, especially at this difficult time where the future of our industry is unknown. Thank you to everyone who donated and to every club who worked together and participated in our challenge, it is all for the most amazing foundation.”
