The Northern Ireland Hospice has teamed up with a distribution firm to collect “real” Christmas trees for recycling after the festive season.

Trees will be collected by volunteers from Menzies Distribution, directly from householders on Saturday January 9 in return for a donation towards the work of the hospice.

The collected trees will be taken to one of Antrim and Newtownabbey’s household  recycling centres where they will be recycled with garden waste.

The service will be open to all residents in the borough with up to 80 collection slots available.

Householders can still recycle their “real” Christmas trees in their brown bin, through the bulky collection service or at one of the borough’s five recycling centres.

Meanwhile, the council has announced that it has the highest recycling rate in Northern Ireland at 61.2 per cent.

There has been a reduction in the total amount of waste landfilled by 2,429 tonnes.
