Storm Arwen update for Northern Ireland - power cuts, travel disruption and flying debris possible, says Met Office

The forecaster issued the update to reflect improving confidence in details and warning area extended southwards, covering much of the UK.

Storm Arwen will bring high winds southwards from northern Scotland during Friday. Gusts will widely reach 55 to 65 mph in many coastal areas with the highest gusts in coastal parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland where gusts in excess of 65 mph are expected in some areas.

The Yellow Warning is in place from 9am on Friday to 6pm on Saturday for Northern Ireland.

High winds will develop during Friday afternoon and evening may cause some travel disruption and damage.

The forecaster has warned the public that the following incidents are possible;-

:: Injuries and danger to life from flying debris

:: Some damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

:: Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible

:: Some roads and bridges may close

:: Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

:: Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and property.
