The UK’s independent job board, CV-Library, found that the number of vacancies on offer in January grew by 2.8 per cent year-on-year.
The study (which explores job market data from January 2020 and compares this with findings from the same period in 2019) also reveals that applications grew by 5.7 per cent year-on-year.
Which cities have seen a growth in applications?
Some of the cities to have seen the biggest growth in applications include Aberdeen (up 22.8%), Southampton (up 15.7%), Leicester (up 15.5 %) and Portsmouth (up 14.5%).

Lee Biggins, CEO and founder of CV-Library said, “It’s great to see that eager job hunters took advantage of the booming job market in January - especially given the uncertainty around Brexit.
“We know that the start of the year is consistently one of the most popular times to look for a job and this means there’s greater competition for top roles.”
Salaries are on the rise
Interestingly, the data also went on to reveal that salaries rose in key industries across the UK, including in the property (up 9.8%), legal (up 8.5%), retail (up 8.4%), electronics (up 6.1%) and engineering (up 5.3%) sectors.

Biggins continues, “With Brexit out of the way, it’s clear that companies are beginning to invest in their hiring strategies again and this could mean you secure a higher pay packet when you change jobs. So, get ready to master your negotiation skills when searching for your next role!”
